10 Questions Every Couple Should Ask Before Getting Married

Sometimes the only thing that can prepare you for marriage is marriage.

But in order to minimize the crippling effects of waking up one day and realizing that your partner really isn’t perfect, it’s important to ask great questions.

It’s the number one piece of advice we give to the thousands of couples we’ve worked with to prepare them for marriage and it comes down to one word – awareness.

Yes, engagement is a really fun stage of the relationship, but let’s be honest, most couples are looking at the glass half full when they should be talking about who is going to clean the glass after dinner every single night.

Our goal is to get couples talking, learning, and exploring each other on a deeper level. Awareness of your past, your upbringing, your personality strengths and weaknesses, and how you handle conflict.

Here are some questions to get you started:

  • Who will we spend the holidays with? Your family, my family or with friends?

  • What are healthy boundaries we need to put into play on having friends of the opposite sex?

  • What are the primary issues we continue to argue about? What steps are we making to resolve them?

  • Do you feel comfortable seeking professional counseling if needed?

  • How and when will we resolve differences in our marriage?

  • What does money mean to you? (Power, freedom, fear, a necessity, etc.)

  • How did your parents show their love to you?

  • What is one thing that you can work on to become a better listener?

  • When are the times when you feel most connected to me?

  • On a scale from 1 -10, how much of our communication is positive?
